What's involved with gum surgery for receding gums

Gum recession occurs for a variety of reasons. Brushing your teeth too hard or too often; using a hard-bristled brush, and periodontal disease are a few. It’s also more likely to occur as we age because of the gradual loss of muscle and bone after middle-age.
If gum recession is left untreated it can progress far enough that teeth begin to fall out! However, there’s no need to let it get that far because we have an excellent remedy: gum surgery. Here are the details so you know what to expect.
What is gum surgery?
Gum surgery is a treatment for gum issues like gum recession. There are two types of gum surgery Surrey dentists perform: connective tissue graft and free gingival graft.
- Connective tissue graft
- Free gingival graft
Connective tissue graft is used to cover exposed root surfaces. This procedure involves removing a small piece of tissue from the patient's palate, and stitching it into place over the root surface. The graft eventually becomes one with the surrounding tissue as it heals.
Free gingival graft: Similar to a connective tissue graft, this treatment takes tissue from the roof of the mouth and places it over the gum needing support. It’s used in places where gum tissue is thin and would benefit from additional tissue.
Sometimes the procedure requires local anesthesia, other times the patient may be partially awake or asleep. The surgery generally takes a couple hours to perform.
Gum surgery recovery
After gum surgery, your dentist will send you home with instructions for eating (soft foods) , cleaning (avoid the surgical sites), rinsing, and medications. It may take a week or two to heal, however it’s likely you can return to work the following day.
We hope this information is helpful. Details will vary depending on an individual’s situation. If you have questions or concerns about gum surgery, a Surrey dentist will be happy to answer them for you.
