How to manage dental anxiety before a root canal
Dental anxiety before a root canal is a common experience. So you’re not alone if this describes you. Fortunately, there are a variety of things you can do to manage it. For instance, before a root canal, our Surrey patients find listening to music or audio books helpful. Others meditate or bring a friend for support. However, if the anxiety feels like it is too much to handle and prevents you from getting treatment, oral sedation can help, too.
Tips to manage root canal dental anxiety
- Talk to a dentist to assuage fears
- Listen to music or audio books
- Practice meditation, deep breathing
- Bring a friend for support
- Reward yourself afterwards
- Oral sedation
A lot of anxiety is due to fear of the unknown. The easiest fix for this is to talk to your dentist. Ask questions about the procedure so you know what to expect. Just having more information helps to relieve fears, which then allows anxiety to dissipate. Additionally, if you have concerns, let your dentist know. They may be able to tweak things here and there to help you be more at ease.
Many root canal patients find listening to their favourite music or audiobooks helpful as they provide a pleasant distraction. Some prefer meditation or deep breathing because it promotes relaxation and calm feelings. Still others take comfort in having a close friend nearby and appreciate the reassurance. All help to manage anxiety.
In addition to the tips above, you could also plan a small reward for yourself after the treatment is done. It gives your mind something else to focus on. And who doesn’t like having a little treat to look forward to!
If none of these tips has helped you conquer your dental anxiety, then oral sedation may be the answer. An anxious patient would take one or two prescribed pills 1 hour before treatment. They would then feel calm and relaxed through their procedure. It’s an effective way to address overwhelming anxiety that can’t be managed in other ways.
