When it’s time to see the dentist, sedation for Surrey patients who feel anxious can make the difference between getting the care they need or going without.

That’s one huge benefit of oral sedation, but there are others too.

Oral sedation benefits

  • Makes dental care accessible
  • Helps patients feel calm and relaxed
  • Can be used by children

First, let’s answer a few questions about oral sedation.

What is oral sedation?

Oral sedation, also called conscious sedation, is a minimal form of sedation dentists use to help put anxious patients at ease. Sometimes patients even forget they were at the dentist–which sets them up well for the next time they go because there’s no build-up of anxious feelings to carry forward.

Who is oral sedation for?

It’s for patients who have dental anxiety or dental phobia. It can also be used when other reasons make dental procedures more challenging. For example, a strong gag reflex or involuntary movements. It can also be used for children.

How does oral sedation work?

One or two pills are taken 1 hour before your appointment. Our dentists in Guildford typically use benzodiazepines Triazolam or Ativan. This helps patients feel relaxed just before they go in and keeps them comfortable throughout. Patients remain conscious and can answer questions, though awareness can drift at times. A small nudge will bring it back. Patients will need someone to drive them that day as the drug temporarily impairs thinking and motor control.

What are the benefits of oral sedation?

Oral sedation can make the difference between receiving dental care or going without because someone is too anxious or afraid to go. So it has an indirect, yet big impact on health.

It also benefits people who are inclined to stall getting dental exams or dental procedures. Knowing there is an easy way to take the edge off the whole experience can help them keep more routine scheduling of visits.

Some people may be fine with a quick dental exam but struggle with more lengthy procedures. Oral sedation helps these patients as well.

Preventing a rise in dental anxiety in children is important for lifelong health. For children who have trouble tolerating dental procedures, oral sedation can be given in liquid form to help them remain at ease and get the care they need.
