When should I choose veneers over crowns

Veneers cover the front surface of a tooth to improve how it looks. This addresses problems with staining, irregularly shaped or crooked teeth, and to close spaces between teeth. They are made of very thin porcelain that is permanently cemented onto the prepared surface of the tooth. Veneers are customized to match the shape and colour required to fit in with the rest of the teeth.

A crown, also called a cap, fits over the top of an existing tooth and holds it together. This addresses the problem where a tooth is weakened by large fillings or cracks, and is at risk of breaking. When being fitted for a crown, some of the tooth’s surface is removed to make it smaller, and the cap is fit over the top. Partial crowns, called onlays, are also a common option. These cover just the part of the tooth that is causing the problem, keeping more of the natural tooth intact.

If you have been wanting to correct or improve an aesthetic issue with your teeth, veneers are a great choice to get a bright, beautiful smile. Consult with a dentist to make sure it’s the right choice for you.
