When is it Necessary to Remove Your Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in the back of your mouth. These are the last teeth that we get as we grow, commonly coming in between the ages of 17 and 22. For some, these teeth can come in being healthy, properly aligned, and fully erupted. However, for many people, other problems may arise and removal of wisdom teeth at a dentist clinic may be necessary.

Wisdom Teeth Do Not Emerge (Fully or at All)

A common problem with some wisdom teeth is that they do not erupt through the gum. In some cases, they could remain completely hidden below the surface of your gums. In other cases, they might partially emerge, but do not have room to fully come out. This is known as impacted wisdom teeth.

The primary problem with impacted wisdom teeth is that they become a breeding ground for bacteria, and this often results in infection. Infection can cause not only pain, but also damage to nearby roots and bone. Bacteria can also cause gum disease, which can damage other healthy teeth.

Crowding

You may also need your wisdom teeth removed if you do not have the space for them to properly come in. If your wisdom teeth are crowded and continue to emerge, this can cause damage to other teeth, and even push them to cause overcrowding in other areas of your mouth.

Often, having wisdom teeth removed at a young age makes the procedure simpler, as the teeth have not had time to fully establish and build a strong root system. Many dentists are able to examine your mouth and decide on what is best for your wisdom teeth. For all of your dentistry needs, make sure you go with Riverside Heights Dental.
