What is Oral Sedation in Dentistry?June 3rd, 2017 | by Riverside Dental | in Dental Health | 0
Choosing a dentist is an important decision, and many patients are afraid of the process of cleanings, fillings, and other dental procedures. Anxiety can keep people from visiting the dentist, for fear of what they might experience. As a rule dentists are incredibly caring and kind, and will do whatever they can to make patients comfortable and to relieve unnecessary fears. Unfortunately, the anxiety is sometimes too great for the patient to overcome, and they may stay away from the dentist completely - even if they are experiencing serious and dangerous pain.
Clients who experience extreme anxiety about visiting the dentist can now look for a dentist that offers conscious oral sedation. This is different than traditional anesthesia, where the patient is completely knocked out for the procedure. Instead, conscious oral sedation, also known as sedation dentistry, allows patients to take a sedative pill about an hour before their appointment to help them relax. The patient may take another pill when they arrive at the office, depending on their level of anxiety and how well the first pill is working for them.
Using the sedation dental method, patients are conscious and can still respond to questions during the procedure, but are unlikely to remember the procedure when it has finished. The process is an incredible step for patients whose anxiety has kept them out of the dentist office for many years.
Dentists who perform this type of sedation are trained through a special program, and undergo specified certification and training on techniques and procedures, including heart and oxygen monitoring of the patient.
Choosing a dentist who provides conscious sedation can help patients to release anxiety about visiting the dentist and dental procedures. While oral sedation can help calm nerves, it is still of utmost importance to choose a dentist that is kind and communicative, as this will calm nerves and allow the patient to relax even further.
