Dentures are an excellent way to replace missing teeth, provide a way to chew food, and give yourself a confident, beautiful smile. But to keep them in good condition and fitting well, you need to see your dentist regularly. Read on for more information.

Question:

How often do I need to take my dentures for a check?

Answer:

You need to take your dentures in for a check every 6 months. There are some good reasons for maintaining this schedule.

During these visits the dentist will check your dentures for damage and fit. They will make any necessary adjustments and repairs. They’ll also give them a good cleaning because even dentures get plaque buildup! This focused attention helps your dentures last longer and maintains their ongoing comfort level in your mouth. Regular tweaks and fixes prevent problems from occurring or becoming worse.

The dentist will also check your oral health to ensure there is no gum disease, oral cancer, cavities or other problems present.

As we age, our mouths change, resulting in our dentures not fitting as well over time. Signs of looseness to be aware of include clicking, sliding out of place, sores and discomfort. Additionally, if you are using  adhesive to keep your dentures in place, it might actually be hiding a loosened or ill-fitting denture.

If you notice any of these signs it means your dentures are no longer fitting you very well and will cause problems. Make an appointment as soon as you can to get them corrected. Quick action will help you avoid discomfort and interruption of your daily dietary routine.

Properly cared for, your dentures can last up to 10 years or more! Regular denture checkups every 6 months improve their longevity and keep you smiling.
