The most important reason to go to the dental office is for a dental exam.  This is important in order to identify any issues that are present before they become a problem.  A first visit at our dental office starts with a discussion about what brings you to the dentist and any problems or concerns that you may have.  Once you have discussed your concerns, the dentist will have a quick look around the mouth and decide if any x-rays are needed to help in the diagnosis.  After the x-rays are taken, the teeth are cleaned for both tartar and plaque that are located both where you can see and below the gumline.  The plaque and tartar below the gumline is quite harmful because it can cause gingivitis and periodontitis. The plaque also can cause cavities to develop in the teeth.   The dentist will then combine both the x-rays and clinical examination to investigate the concerns.  After the exam is finished, the dentist will provide you with an explanation of the issues and necessary treatment needed to alleviate the issues.

Often times, people do not go to the dentist because they don't have pain or they think their teeth are healthy.  Unfortunately, most problems develop before there are any signs or symptoms of a problem.  Most problems can be identified early on enough to prevent further issues.  You should have an examination by a dentist every 6 months to a year.  Some people are more prone to decay and gum disease than others and require more frequent monitoring.  Children, for example, can develop cavities quite quickly so it is important that they are seen regularly by the dentist.
